It’s 1967, the Summer of Love. With the war in Vietnam raging and the draft hanging over their heads, three Milwaukee high school graduates set off on very different paths to seek their own destinies and discover that people, places, and things are neither what they expected, nor what they appear to be. Bob Ralston journeys to San Francisco—the epicenter of the hippie movement. John Haus enlists in the army and ends up in Vietnam. Jim Gaston beats the draft and seeks an alternative lifestyle. Each must live with their choices and survive in one of America’s most tumultuous times. Those who experienced the 1960s will relive them as the author’s words capture the awakening of millions of America’s youth to a world of free love, drugs, and rock and roll like it’s never been played before or since. Readers too young or too old to have lived through the Summer of Love will experience Haight-Ashbury through the eyes of someone who was there. My Summer on Haight Street is a remarkably insightful chronicle of three Baby Boomers in the turbulent 1960s that defined a generation and a nation. This fast-paced novel is based on several real people and some real events. Robert Rice, Jr., has crafted a compelling story that captures the aspirations and fears of young men who elected not to go to college immediately out of high school in 1966 and 1967 and faced the prospect of being drafted and sent to Vietnam.

I'm a baby boomer with lots of incredible memories (and a lot of incredible memories that I don't remember) of the late 1960s.Robert Rice's book brought a lot of it back. I spent the summer of love in Waikiki, playground for the best bands playing the best music ever recorded or heard live. But even there on the beach in paradise, we looked to San Francisco as the official/unofficial source from which all cool flowed to everyone on the planet under 30.
This book captures the mood of what was happening at the center of it all, San Francisco, the place from which the entire country--from Lihue to Bangor--got the okay for what we were doing. It was all okay.
The balance Rice maintains by including other characters and their quests fills a picture that would otherwise be too one-sided because you can't talk about the 60s and not include the young men and women on the wall in DC, and the ones who came home to nothing. A lot of good people died for McNamara and the Gulf of Tonkin hoax (a dress rehearsal for WMD).
This book is "On the Road" for a generation that's bouncing grandchildren on arthritic knees.
Read it. It'll trigger some memories you haven't visited in a long time.

My Summer on Haight Street Robert Rice Jr 9780615767581 Books Reviews
Ther was so much I related to in the incidents and turmoil described. I was vividly reminded of the heart break of the Vietnam war and the emotions we all expeirenced in dealing with our own conflicts and feelings.
It was a great read!!
I started reading it while on vacation and quickly found myself constantlt looking forward to when I could get back to the book.
A great read suggest it for everyone. My summer on Haight Street was one of those book I did not want to see end, Loved it.
I was born in 1963 so, although I had heard about the Summer of Love while growing up, I never experienced it but was always curious about this era. The author, Robert Rice, Jr illustrated this time very well! It was interesting to read about the main character and how his opinions and thoughts evolved as he experienced the Summer of Love. It was well written and I learned some things about this difficult time in our country! I highly recommend this book!
This was lots of fun to read because I'm from the Milwaukee area and I remember all too well this time. Easy ,enjoyable read.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. What great memories of a time in my life that seemed to bring new experiences everyday 1967-70. Mr. Rice's book accurately captures the spirit the Viet Nam years- political turmoil, music, drugs and civil rights. For those of us that lived those times this is a great trip down memory lane. Can't wait for the movie version!
I'll keep it very brief. Every iconic 60's song lyric is mis-quoted (how could you get the words of "For What It's Worth" so wrong). Scenes of getting together to take an LSD "pill" (it was not in a pill form in the early days) with an "obligatory" glass of kool-aid on the side (why?). It's obvious to anyone who experienced the late 60's first hand, that this author is NOT writing from first hand memory (besides all first hand memories are foggy at best!!!). Maybe the ideas came from stories he read, or period films but the feel is so completely wrong that I can't believe the author's story at all. It's like a celibate tea-tottler trying to describe an acid fueled orgy! I enjoyed a good laugh but if you're hoping for a genuine trip down memory lane, and not an imagining of how it might have been, then please look elsewhere. Just one sugar cube would have added a little bit of realism.
As a member of the same generation, memories have faded like an old madras shirt. The author does an excellent job taking you back to those times, and you will be reminded that there were two sides to the story, it was not just sex, drugs, and rock and roll. For those that did not live through the 60's, there is an important message to learn if we are to keep from repeating the same mistakes that so divided our nation at that time in our history. The characters bring the story to life, you will put a familiar face from your past with every one of them. I am left thinking of the irony of being the generation that "so diasppointed their parents" to becoming the generation of socially responsible free thinkers that re-shaped our nation.
