Rick Stepton is a legend in the world of big band lead trombone playing. This is an entertaining, informative, easy read.
Rick Stepton is a hero for many 50 somethings who grew up during the high school jazz band movement of the 1970s. He was a star in one of their favorite bands (Buddy Rich) and all the young trombonists tried to sound like him. Transcendent Trombone brings back those wonderful memories.
Frank has given us a wide range of material...including tons of stories and anecdotes of life "on the road". Of course it's almost all through the first-hand observations of Rick Stepton who was born into a trombone-playing family and parlayed that into a remarkable career with Rich, Herman, Ferguson, et al. Rick didn't hold back in his playing career and, fortunately, didn't hold back in providing Frank McGowan with a plethora of "good stuff". Equally as fortunate, Frank knew what to do with the material and has crafted a terrific story of the jazz scene and one of its great players.
Frank McGowan is one of my best friends and he has loved the Jazz scene for quite some time. His knowledge of Jazz goes beyond what even Jazz fans really know. I haven't been a Jazz fan from an early age, but the detail that Frank put into this book made me appreciate Jazz and the Artist's who were and are so dedicated to their music. Also the life of a some Jazz Artist's is so sad that they had to depend on Drugs, Alcohol and low pay to apply their trade. I recommend this book to everyone,even though they are not Jazz fans. Thanks Frank for giving me an appreciation of the Jazz scene. Ray
